Bye Bye Spectrum

Published by hcbb10 at 9:03 pm under NBA, NHL Edit This

It was announced today that the Wachovia Spectrum will be demolished following the upcoming 2008-09 hockey and soccer seasons.

The Phantoms and Kixx will have to find new homes following their upcoming seasons. The arena has been the home to plenty of concerts, boxing matches, circuses, monster truck rallies and more importantly; the home of the Sixers and Flyers.

The Flyers won their only two Stanley Cup Championships when they inhabited the Spectrum, which is the baby of Ed Snider, and opened on September 30, 1967.

It is being demolished to make room for the 300,000-square-foot entertainment complex, Philly Live!, which will consist of stores and restaurants.

It is in discussion to hold a Flyers and Sixers preseason game at the Spectrum in celebration of the arena’s final season.

The stadium has also hosted two Final Four NCAA Basketball Tournaments, both won by Indiana.

One of the most famous Flyers games of all time took place at the Spectrum, when the Flyers beat the Red Army hockey team 4-1. The Russians left the ice in protest of how physical of a game the Flyers were playing, only to return after a 16-minute delay.

The Spectrum was where many Philadelphia fans saw their first hockey and basketball games and it will never be forgotten. The demolition of the Spectrum will bring an era to its end.

Veterans Stadium and the Spectrum were the sports homes for the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers and Sixers for decades and now both will be nothing but memories for thousands of Philly fans at the end of the 2008-09 hockey season.
