Induction Day
Cooperstown at its greatest!
Induction day at the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame is the best one-day ceremony in sports.
A new class of Hall of Famers was inducted into the league’s hallowed halls on Sunday in Cooperstown, NY. Among them was Yankees reliever Goose Gossage and Red Sox manager Dick Williams.
Gossage began his career with the Chicago White Sox and finished with a career record of 124-107 with 310 saves and a 3.01 ERA.
Williams, who won two World Series with the Oakland A’s in 1972 and 1973 also managed the Red Sox and Padres. He finished his 21 year managerial career with 1,571 wins, which is good for 17th all-time.
Also inducted today were former Dodgers owner Walter O’Malley, former Pirates owner Barney Dreyfuss, former MLB commissioner Bowie Kuhn and former manager Billy Southworth. All of these inductions were posthumous and all were inducted via the revamped Veterans Committee.
Other honorees today were Larry Whiteside, a pioneering black journalist, who was given the J.G. Taylor Spink Award posthumously. The Ford C. Frick Award was given to Dave Niehaus.
In other Yankees news, as I reported early yesterday morning, the team traded for Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte.
The players that the Yankees sent to Pittsburgh were rumored players and were not the correct players who eventually were sent in return.
The players who I originally said were sent to Pittsburgh who are not going are George Kontos (RHP) and Phil Coke (LHP).
The Yankees sent RHPs Jeff Karstens and Daniel McCutchen along with previously reported RHP Russ Ohlendorf and outfielder Jose Tabata in the revised deal.
