An Interesting Day on the Diamond

Published by hcbb10 at 11:12 pm under MLB Edit This

What an interesting day today was around the world of Major League Baseball.

We had a brawl, a wild one in the Bronx, a sweep of the Mets by Houston, a comeback win for the Cubs over the Pirates and a walk-off win for the Rays.

Here are the highlights (and some low lights as well).

  • Angels blow a five-run lead to lose to the Yankees 14-9.
  • The Cubs blow a 5-2 lead in the eighth only to go on and win 8-5 on the strength of homeruns from Reed Johnson and Alfonso Soriano in the bottom of the inning.
  • The Mets were swept by Houston, falling 4-0 today, for the first time since 1993. It was the Mets fourth straight loss and the loss concluded a 1-5 trip for the Mets. The Mets have not scored a run in the past 16 innings.
  • The Rays, trailing at one point 3-1 to the Tigers, but wound up winning in 10 innings on a walk-off walk, 6-5.
  • In the final ‘weird’ game of the afternoon, the Royals beat up on the White Sox by a score of 14-3. The blowout caused a brawl between the two teams when White Sox pitcher D.J. Carrasco hit Royals catcher Miguel Olivo with a pitch. Both players were ejected along with Zach Greinke and both managers.

There must be a full moon, or one coming soon, because today was one of the more interesting and weird days throughout the world of Major League Baseball. You can expect more of it as we head into the dog days of summer and the pennant races get closer and closer.
