Mets Extend Manuel
The New York Mets reportedly have extended the contract of interim manager Jerry Manuel. Only days after giving Omar Minaya a four year extension as General Manager, an undeserved extension, the Mets have extended their manager’s contract.
Manuel replaced Willie Randolph mid season and helped turn the Mets season around but wasn’t immune to another late season collapse. With 17 games left in the season the Mets had a 3.5 game lead over the Phillies in the East and found ways to lose for a second straight season.
Manuel was the bench coach under Randolph and was present for the team’s 2007 monumental collapse.
Manuel has been extended through the 2010 season and the contract includes a club option for 2011.
Manuel presviously managed the Chicago White Sox. He was fired from that job in 2003 after winning the AL Manager of the Year Award in 2000 with the ChiSox for leading the team to a 95-67 record and the AL Central title and the league’s best record.
That team was eliminated in the ALDS three games to none by the Wild Card winning Seattle Mariners.
