Rivera Has Surgery
Yankees closer Mariano Rivera underwent shoulder surgery on Tuesday and will be able to begin throwing again in about three months.
Rivera underwent surgery on his right shoulder. The procedure was performed by New York Mets Medical Director Doctor David Altcheck. Doctor Altcheck also performed shoulder surgery on catcher Jorge Posada last summer.
Rivera had 39 saves in 2008 for the Yankees, who missed the postseason for the first time since the strike shortened 1994 season, and had an ERA of 1.40. It was his lowest ERA since 2005.
Rivera is 38 years old and should be ready to pitch for the Yankees by the time Spring Training rolls around.
