Nolan Out as Niners Head Coach
The San Francisco 49ers have fired head coach Mike Nolan. The team announced its move earlier Monday.
Replacing Nolan as head coach for the remainder of the 2008 season is assistant coach Mike Singletary.
The firing comes a day after the team lost to the New York Giants, 29-17 and two weeks after an embarrassing loss to the Eagles.
The Eagles scored 23 points in the fourth quarter to knock off the 49ers by a score of 40-26.
The news early in the afternoon on Monday was that Nolan would be let go following the team’s game next Sunday against the Seahwaks.
The team had wanted to wait until after that game because their bye week would be that following week; a convenient time to replace a coach.
No one is sure that the leaked information about Nolan’s impending firing after next week’s game sped up the process or not.
Nolan was 18-37 as the Niners head coach since he took over in 2005.
